Dalhousie Sailing Team 2nd at Student Yachting World Cup!

Dalhousie University’s Sailing Team just returned from France where they competed at the 32nd edition of the Student Yachting World Cup (SYWoC). The team competed last year and placed 6th. They learned a lot from the experience last year and came back this time better prepared and ready to be serious contenders for the Cup.

After the first two days the Canadians were leading the event, with the Irish team close behind. On the third day they saw a bit of a turn of luck when they ripped two spinnakers during the first two windward leeward races. They picked up one discard race and two top 4′s, but were now very close in points with the Irish going into the night race. The night race would be worth double points, and team Canada had to fight very hard for position since they had an old blown out kite, they managed to finish 6th, but it was enough for the Irish team to pass them in points.

Then next day the Canadians picked up even points as the Irish, but were still in touch with the leaders. Unfortunately for Canada the last two days of racing were cancelled due to too much wind, and Dalhousie never got the opportunity to catch the leaders. However, the team came out of the regatta feeling very proud of their 2nd place finish. The competition was very stiff and the Irish sailed a great regatta, consistently putting themselves in the top 3.

Dalhousie has already qualified for next year’s SYWoC and they will be coming back ready to win the Cup.

2012 CICSA Fleet Racing National Championships

This past weekend (October 27-28), the McGill Sailing Team, in conjunction with the Royal Saint Lawrence Yacht Club, was proud to host the Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Associations(CICSA) National Fleet Racing Championships. We welcomed 8 teams from far and tide with representation from both coasts. The fleet included teams from Dalhousie, HEC, McGill, McMaster, Queen’s, RMC, University of British Columbia and University of Ottawa.

The weekend opened on Friday night with a gathering of student-athlete leaders an volunteers representing each of the CICSA schools present. With so many trams from across the country gathered together, the meeting was an important opportunity for the teams to discuss pressing topics and share ideas in the interest of further developing university racing across Canada.

Racing began Saturday morning, but in contrast to the heavy winds brought in just days later by Hurricane Sandy, the weekend was certainly the calm before the storm. Both Saturday and Sunday we saw light and shifty winds out of the northeast. Our race committee battled hard to get in as many races in as possible. The outcome was challenging racing for all athletes, given the strong Royal St. Lawrence current combined with the light conditions.

After a short postponement waiting for the fog to lift, the A-fleet departed soon after 10 AM Saturday morning. Winds remained light for the better part of the morning, increasing only slightly throughout the day. By the end of the day, A-fleet completed 6 races while B-fleet squeezed in 4. The McGill Redbirds B-fleet had an impressive Saturday posting near perfect scores, giving up the top spot only once to the Dalhousie Tigers. Meanwhile McGill, Queen’s and UBC traded the top spot of A-fleet throughout the day, until a lengthy protest tossed McGill from the third race of the day.

Sunday brought lighter breeze in the morning than Saturday which made for a difficult time getting the first races of the day off. Again, the winds gradually built throughout the day until reaching above 10 knots for the final races of the day. With a quick one-race rotation to finish off the day, both fleets completed 9 races each. The top spot in A-fleet went to UBC while McGill continued its dominance in the B-fleet. McGill Redbirds took the overall title of the CICSA fleet racing championships with the Dalhousie Tigers and Queen’s Gaels following closely behind in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

A big thank you to all the participants, especially those who came from far and wide (Dalhousie and UBC), to our host the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club, Principal Race Officer Emerson Krock, Judge David Covo, and finally all the volunteers who made this event possible.

The 2012 Canadian Collegiate Keelboat Nationals was held this [October 13th-14th] in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The event was hosted by Dalhousie Sailing in conjunction with the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. Competition was strong with teams traveling from Ontario and Quebec to compete for the national title, and the chance to represent Canada at the 2013 Student Yachting World Cup (SYWoC). Dalhousie University was looking to win the title for the 3rd year in a row, while HEC Montreal and Saint Mary’s University (SMU) were looking to showcase their talents as new teams on the CICSA circuit. The University of Ottawa brought a strong team and were not to be underestimated, this year their boat would be skippered by 2010 Norwegian SYWoC team member Richard Karlson.

The regatta got off to a great start on Saturday with sunny skies and a blustery 20 knot North Easterly breeze. Some puffs were pushing 25 knots and teams battled to keep their boats upright and sailing fast. Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s dominated the front of the pack, but Dal came out on top with straight bullets. The race committee ran 4 excellent races and at the end of the day Dal was sitting in first, Saint Mary’s in second, U of O in 3rd and HEC Montreal in 4th.

After a little well needed rest all the competitors met up at a mid-regatta social hosted by one of the Dalhousie Sailing Team members. The party got pretty lively with most of Dal Sailing’s 70 members in attendance in addition to the teams from out of town. Of course, with serious racing to be done the next day the competitors had an early night to rest up.

Sunday’s conditions were far different than the original forecast, which called for similar breeze to Saturday. The first race was postponed on land for 1 hour before enough wind filled in to head out for the race course. Although the breeze was light for the first race, it continued to build throughout the day and 3 great races were sailed. In the lighter conditions all 4 teams were in close competition with the lead changing frequently. In the end Dalhousie managed to complete another perfect day scoring 3 first place finishes, but not without some stiff competition from the Saint Mary’s squad. Unfortunately, Saint Mary’s were disqualified from races that day after failing to comply with the Sailing Instructions. In the end, only two points separated 2nd, 3rd and 4th place.

Awards were held at RNSYS where trophies were given out to all competitors as well as prizes supplied by North Sails Yacht Shop. After concluding a great weekend of racing the University of Ottawa and HEC Montreal hit the road to return to their studies. Dalhousie is excited to have qualified to represent Canada at next year’s SYWoC, and is currently busy preparing to compete in the 2012 edition in under two weeks time.

Queen’s Gaels hosted the 2012 CICSA Team Racing Championships out of Kingston Yacht Club on October 20th and 21st, 2012. There was a great turn out of schools, with teams from Queens, RMC, McGill, McMaster, a coalition team of University of Ottawa and Carleton, and Dalhousie. The event kicked off with an umpire training clinic led by team racing umpire specialist Rob Overton on Friday, October 19th. Eight umpires helped judge the regatta which was sailed in Flying Junior’s and Club 420’s.

Teams arrived at 9:00 Saturday morning to winds of about 12 knots which built to 18kts over the course of the day. Queen’s shore team and a race committee of volunteers helped get racing under way by 10:30, slightly behind schedule. The format was a fifteen race round robin, so 7.5 flights were scheduled for the day. With the great wind conditions, these were easily completed despite a few breakdowns, mostly in the aging FJ fleet. One of the breakdowns resulted in a rematch between McGill and Queen’s, scheduled for Sunday morning. With teams being new to team racing, there were few umpire calls to make. Racing ended at 2:30, with Queen’s and McGill tied for 1st, and Dalhousie in third.

Once all teams were off the water, there was a barbecue and an umpire debrief to talk through situations that had come up during the day. Sunday’s racing started with the rematch between Queen’s and McGill deciding the winner of the round robin. A playoff page and consolation round was set up for the day. The wind was similar to Saturday’s, with a forecast to build up to 25 knots. The playoff round made for some exciting and close racing, with Queen’s beating McGill 2-1 in the final for the win. The consolation final between RMC and Dalhousie was not raced due to building winds and cold sailors and umpires.

Thank you to all of the volunteers, umpires, Tamara for taking pictures, and all of the teams (some travelling very far) for making it a successful event!

It’s been an exciting year for Canadian Intercollegiate racing and not just within Canada but on the world stage.

To start things off, CIC sailing would like to congratulate the Queen’s Men’s Team, and the Coalition Men’s Team on their acceptance of the World University Match Racing Event. This regatta is being held in Nice, France during September 3 rd to September 8th. This is a great opportunity for exposure to match racing within collegiate sailing. Good luck to all the Canadian teams participating at this Event!

Next, Dalhousie University has accepted the challenge to participle in the 2012 SYWoC. This World Championship for collegiate sailing is held annually in France and is an amazing opportunity for Canadian college sailors to experience racing at a higher level. Dalhousie University will have the opportunity to compete against collegiate sailors from all over the world, from England to Poland, China, Spain, Italy and more. This event will take place from October 27th to November 3 rd. Good Luck Dalhousie!

On the National front, we have some very exciting events that will be held in Canada this spring:

• Keelboat Nationals, September 14-16 in Halifax, Nova Scotia

• Team Race Nationals, October 20-21 in Kingston, Ontario

• Fleet Race National, October 27-29 in Montreal, Quebec

CIC is proud to offer the chance for Canadian collegiate sailors to participate in many of the different types of sailboat racing, which is why CICSA has organized national championships in keelboats, team racing and fleet racing. Getting the opportunity to compete in all the types of racing is a great learning opportunity for young sailors.

To top off our year of exciting events, CICSA is pleased to announce that it has been officially recognized by the Canadian Yachting Association. We are excited about what this means for Canadian Collegiate sailing and are even more excited about what the upcoming fall racing schedule has in store. Look at our website www.cicsailing.ca for more information about upcoming events and results.

Keep Sailing!
